The films of Živojin Pavlović, Puriša Đorđević, Aleksandar Petrović, Antun Vrdoljak and other directors approached the politically very important narrative of the partisan fighting from a very nuanced and often quite critical perspective, with "Zaseda" being perhaps the most poignant example. A highly political film, it is also valued as one of the pinnacles of the Black Wave (Crni Talas) poetic tendency of Yugoslav cinema. Compared to films such as "Tri" ("Three"), "Jutro" ("Morning") or "Kad čuješ zvona" ("When you hear the bells"), "Zaseda" can be understood as a film typical for its era, and as a transgressive, subversive piece of art.
