Lecture Performance with Discussion by Vladimir Bjeličić | Markiza de Sada

Moderation: Aleksandar Ranković (Universität Wien)

17 March 2023, 6 – 8 pm

Universität Wien, Institut für Slawistik, Seminarraum 1
Spitalgasse 2, Hof 3, 1090 Wien

Belgrade-based Vladimir Bjeličić’s lecture performance will address how academia, in recent years, has approached a burgeoning Serbian drag scene in contrast with the actual state of affairs surrounding this subculture. Bjeličić, who is otherwise known as his drag alter ego Markiza de Sada, will highlight the development of drag in specific social and political conditions – bearing in mind the implications which drag may evoke as a performative form lingering in a liminal space between art and popular culture. The lecture performance will closely examine the simultaneous allure of absence and presence surrounding drag in light of the transformative potential that such a performance of gender can have in contemporary Serbian society. In the words of Vladimir Bjeličić: “Are we all born Yugoslavs and the rest is drag is yet to be seen in a critical and campy performative twist”.

Speakers

Vladimir Bjeličić (1983, Belgrade) is active in the field of independent curatorial and artistic practice. His practice is based on the representation of corporeality in the digital era, translation of curatorial practice through performance, and ongoing articulation of the ideas of collectiveness and equal (re)distribution of commons in regards to interspecies communication (man and machine/ man and plant). Bjeličić is one of the founding members of the post-curatorial formation Vocal Curatorial Syndrome and the drag collective Ephemeral Confession, and a permanent collaborator on the ongoing project #SERGINA, by British artist Elly Clarke.
