In Slavic loanwords of Latin and Early Romance origin, gender usually corresponds to the original gender of the donor language. This is particularly true of loanwords that belong to the thematic stems; cf. e.g. L casulam f. > Sl. *košuľa f. ‛shirt’ or L pāgānum m. ‛country dweller’ > Sl. *poganъ m. ‛heathen’. However, a significant number of cases does not follow the pattern. Here belong many C-stems, e.g. L crucem f. > Sl. *križь m. ‛cross’ or L ratiōnem f. ‛reasoning; calculation’ > SCr. račun m. ‛check’, occasional neutra pluralia, e.g. L ba(l)nea n.pl. > Sl. *ban̕a f.sg. ‛bath’ or L scrīnia n.pl. > Sl. *skrin̕a f.sg. ‛chest’, and even some place and island names, e.g. L Albōnam f. > SCr. Labin m. or L Corcyram f. > SCr. dated Krkar m. In this talk, we shall investigate what alignment and misalignment of gender and stem can tell us about the evolution of second language proficiency at the receiving end of the borrowing process that took place during and immediately following the migratory period.

Orsat Ligorio PhD PhD works at the University of Belgrade (2014‒22 Assistant Professor, 2023‒ Associate Professor) where he regularly teaches Intro to Greek and Historical grammar of Greek and occasionally Intro to Sanskrit, Advanced Sanskrit and Comparative Linguistics. Other than than he has taught a variety of extracurricular courses such as Intro to Old Persian, Intro to Old Avestan, Intro to Old Phrygian, etc.
Apart from the University of Belgrade, he also works at the SASA Institute of the Serbian language where he is engaged on a project directed by A. Loma which aims to compile a new etymological dictionary of Serbo-Croatian, the Etimološki rječnik srpskog jezika. Currently, the team is working on a segment of lexicon beginning in bl- and bo- and Ligorio routinely does Indo-European and Proto-Slavic etymologies for the inherited lexicon as well as Greek, Latin, Romanian, Italian, Illyrian, etc. etymologies for the borrowings.
